It is not possible to install Skype, Google Earth or any 32-bit
application in Linux Mint 14 RC 64-bit.

Cause of the problem
問題の原因

The ability to install 32-bit applications in a 64-bit environment is
commonly referred to as “Multiarch”.

64 ビット環境に 32 ビットアプリケーションをインストールする機能は一般に
“Multiarch” と呼ばれています。

An upstream change occurred in Debian’s dpkg which made the Multiarch
configuration in Ubuntu obsolete. That configuration was changed in
Ubuntu and moved from dpkg to Ubiquity.

Debian の提供する dpkg のアップストリームが変更されたことで、Ubuntu の
Multiarch の設定が使い物にならなくなりました。Ubuntu においてこの設定は
変更され、dpkg から Ubiquity に移動されました。

Linux Mint uses an older version of Ubiquity by default and the problem
wasn’t detected during QA. It impacts the two 64-bit editions of Linux
Mint 14 RC.

Linux Mint はデフォルトでは Ubiquity の古いバージョンを使用しているため、
品質評価期間中にこの問題を見つけられませんでした。Linux Mint 14 RC の
2 つの 64 ビット版はこの問題の影響を受けます。

Workaround
回避方法

To enable Multiarch, open a terminal and type the following commands:

Multiarch を有効化するには、ターミナルを開いて以下のコマンドを実行して

    sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

    apt update

Solution
解決策

This issue will be fixed manually in the stable release of Linux Mint 14.

Linux Mint 14 の安定版リリースでは手作業で修正される予定です。

In other words, if you’re running the 64-bit RC of Linux Mint 14, please
apply the workaround. If you’re planning on waiting for the stable
release you don’t need to worry about this issue.

つまり、Linux Mint 14 の 64 ビット RC 版を利用中なら、上に挙げた回避方
法を適用してください。安定版を待つつもりなら、この問題を気にする必要は
ありません。

The description of the cause of the problem was edited to reflect the
fact that this issue is specific to Linux Mint. 32-bit support works out
of the box in Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit. The relevant changes in Ubiquity were
overlooked by the Linux Mint team. Apologies to the Ubuntu developers for
linking to the wrong bug report and creating confusion about this.

この問題は Linux Mint 特有の問題であるという事実がわかるように問題の原
因を説明しました。初期状態の Ubuntu 12.10 64 ビット版は 32 ビットを正し
くサポートしています。Linux Mint チームは Ubiquityになされた Multiarch
関連の変更を見落としました。この問題を誤ったバグ報告と関連付け、混乱引
き起こしたことに対して Ubuntu 開発者に謝罪します。
